This special ceramic bowl is a unique reflection of the experimental ceramics that emerged in the mid-16th-century İznik kilns. Dating to the 1550s and produced in limited numbers, this pattern group is notable for its large white palmettes and curving slit-leaf motifs. This design, appealing to Ottoman palace aesthetics in form and pattern, is a significant example of the period when İznik artisans experimented with new color and motif combinations.
During the construction of the Süleymaniye Mosque between 1550 and 1557, interest in İznik tilemaking was revived in the Ottoman court. The first tile panels were produced during this period, and a vibrant red was added to the color palette. This distinctive hue was successfully applied using an underglaze technique using a special clay slip.
As Çini Project artists, we have created a reproduction that remains faithful to this precious heritage, preserving the spirit and technical details of the period. This bowl is a concrete reflection of our deep respect for both art history and the Ottoman tile tradition.
